Fellowship Open honors June M. Perry for exceptional community initiatives

The Fellowship Open announced that it has selected June M. Perry (pictured), co-founder of the New Concepts Self-Development, as its honoree for this year's annual charity golf event that will take place on Fri., Aug. 15 at the Silver Spring Country Club. The Fellowship Open is the largest golf tournament of its kind in Wisconsin and supports youth organizations in Milwaukee. Since its inception in 2001, the Fellowship Open has contributed more than $350,000 to more than 35 youth organizations.

"We are pleased to honor June Perry at this year's Fellowship Open," said John W. Daniels Jr., chairman of the Fellowship Open and chairman of Quarles & Brady LLP. "No one has done more for this community than June Perry, to encourage young people and create change. She single-handedly has been an enormous force for good in every aspect of human development in this community. Milwaukee owes her a debt of gratitude for her incredible work."

Each year the Fellowship Open recognizes a member of the community who is making a difference in the lives of children. Perry, an important civic advocate for more than thirty years, has touched the community in numerous ways. New Concepts Self-Development, the non-profit she co-founded in 1975, now employs over forty (40) social workers and is lauded as one of Milwaukee 's most successful human services agency. In honor of her efforts, Perry has been recognized locally for her contributions by the Black Women's Network, Professional Dimensions and TEMPO. She is nationally acclaimed for her civic contributions and has received the Kraft Foods Essence Award and the Black Administrators in Child Welfare Long Term Leaders Award, one of the highest awards of recognition for social workers.

The Fellowship Open selects several organizations each to support and highlight their achievements. The organizations must have a long and consistent record of empowering children and improving character development. The 2008 Fellowship Open will be raising funds for Project Nikki, Asset Builders, Shalom Zone, Inc., and Minority Christian Coaches Association.

Selection Committee chairman, Joe Kennedy, stated, "Each year, we are amazed by the remarkable activities of so many people in changing youngsters. There are so many unsung heroes in the community that undertake their efforts simply to make this a better place for everyone. We are proud to acknowledge four remarkable organizations this year."

The Fellowship Open board is composed of more than ninety (90) leading members of Milwaukee community, including elected officials, business leaders, attorneys, physicians, educators and media and sports personalities. University of Wisconsin basketball coach Rob Jeter, former Green Bay Packer development director George Koonce, former Milwaukee Brewers CEO Ulice Payne, Quarles & Brady attorney Cory Nettles, and Wisconsin Supreme Court justice Louis Butler are among the prominent figures who participate.

The Fellowship Open also has been recognized nationally for its innovative approach to involving youth organizations in its annual event. Achievements include sponsoring youngsters to attend the national Black Enterprise Entrepreneurial Conference, where young people learn the basics of entrepreneurship, and sponsoring programs that impart life skills in order to provide children with insight into a variety of careers and encourage them to pursue their dreams.
